BE YOURSELF!
I have heard
many parents tell their children to be like the neighbor’s child or like a
relative’s child. I have understood that in many cases it is difficult for a
person to be different from himself/herself and try to be like another person.
We are uniquely
made by God and we are given talents and gifts according to each person’s
ability. “To one he gave five talents of
money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his
ability.” (Mathew 25: 15). You
are making a great mistake if you always think that others have more than you
have and therefore you hate what you have and you have a low self-esteem about
yourself. It is true that you can have mentors but you should not necessarily
want to be exactly like them because each person has his/her flaws; a mentor
has his too. Be inspired by the achievements of others, but don’t try to be
like them. Be yourself!
Trying to be
like other people leads to complaints, ungratefulness, envy and jealousy. It
leads also to hypocrisy because you would always want to appear who you are
not; thus giving a fake representation of yourself. It is not wise to compare
yourself with others; be yourself and be happy for who you are and what you
have and thrive to achieve better.
I encourage each
one of us to acknowledge the fact that each person is unique. Refuse to be
“others” but be “YOURSELF”.
